How to play Cifra, the daily number puzzle
Cifra is a free daily number puzzle. Every day you get six numbers and a target between 101 and 999. Combine the numbers with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to land exactly on the target, or as close as you can. Everyone in the world plays the same puzzle on the same day, and there is nothing to sign up for.
The rules
- Pick two numbers and an operation (+, −, ×, ÷). They are replaced by the result, which you can use in the next step.
- Each of the six starting numbers can be used only once. You do not have to use all of them.
- Every result must be a positive whole number. Subtractions that reach zero or below, and divisions with a remainder, are not allowed.
- Hit the target exactly to solve the puzzle. If you cannot, the closest number you reach counts. Fewer steps means a better score.
A worked example
Today's numbers are 3, 5, 7, 10, 25 and 50, and the target is 235. One way to solve it:
- 50 + 25 = 75
- 75 × 3 = 225
- 225 + 10 = 235
Three steps, target reached. The 5 and the 7 were never needed, and that is fine. There is often more than one solution, so try for the shortest.
Tips for beginners
- Look for large numbers like 25, 50 or 75 first: multiplying them gets you near big targets quickly.
- Work backwards: ask which number, added to or subtracted from the target, leaves something you can build.
- If you get stuck, use Undo or Reset. There is no penalty, and you can try the unlimited practice mode at any time.
Frequently asked questions
Is the puzzle the same for everyone?
Yes. A new puzzle appears every day at 00:00 UTC and it is identical for all players, so you can compare your result with friends.
Do I need an account to play?
No. Cifra is free and works without registration. Your result is stored anonymously just to show daily statistics.
Can I use a number more than once?
No. Each starting number can be used a single time, but the results you create can be used in later steps.
What if I cannot reach the target?
You can keep trying, or show a possible solution. A close answer still counts, but an exact one with fewer steps scores best.
